Surface Intake Co-Located With Power Plant
Relatively low impact on impingement and entertanment (I&E) due to shared intake.
Using power plant cooling water as feedwater facilitates the RO process.
Warmer feedwater can result in lower energy requirements for the desalting process.
Co-location can result in substantial construction cost savings relative to stand-alone facilities.
Stand-Alone Surface Water (Open Water) Intake
I&E of acquatic organisms is a major issue.
Surface intake provides reliable water quantity but water quality issues can be significant.
Additional energy may be required for pretreatment dur to inferior feed water quality.
Subsurface Intake
Minimal environemtal concerns because I&E is eliminated.
Use of subsurface intakes requires appropriate geological conditions.
Energy use is similar to energy use associated with operation of groundwater wells.
When feasable, subsurface intakes can be less expensive than surface water intakes.
